Born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts, Gogy moved to New York City in 2005 at the age of seventeen to pursue a degree in Design at NYU. Upon a chance encounter with photographer Shadi Perez during his freshmen year, Gogy began assisting him and was consequently exposed to Downtown’s creative culture.
Living amidst this community and with the help of Shadi, Gogy had the resources to explore his enterprise. And he did, channeling his love for design into a small tee-shirt line with best friend Shan Pooviriyakul (Knucklehead Kids NYC), freelance photography, and practicing as a Master Barber at Frank’s Chop Shop in Manhattan.
Anxious to travel, he packed up and spent a semester in Madrid, traveling throughout the country, Europe and North Africa. His classes and adventures would introduce him to Surrealism, Dadaism, and spark his appreciation for the beauty he began to see in every fleeting instant. Upon his return to New York, He began assisting photographer, Mark Borthwick, helping archive film and compiling poetry for Mark’s book projects. The experience perpetuated his fascination with the surreal, as Gogy would get lost in the sea of Mark’s polaroids, all the while being entranced by the ethereal vibe of his workspace. The culmination of all of these influences gave Gogy’s lens ample glimpses into multiple worlds. The total experience has manifested itself in Gogy’s first self-published photography book, LIGHTTIME.
LIGHTTIME is shot almost exclusively in 35mm and highlights Gogy’s experimentation with movement, flash and exposure. Its pages depict the raw commotion in which he lives and was raised. And also his eye for the nebulous, surreal beauty in which, at one time, he often overlooked. Throughout the work, Gogy’s aim is to fuse the seemingly opposing styles together- an attempt at making them mesh and coexist despite their apparent polarity in the contemporary world.
His first solo photography show, “LIGHTTIME” debuted at La Esquina (Soho, NYC) on April 27th – July 6th, 2010,
and his second “LIGHTTIME” exhibition debuted at Le Baron de Paris, in Tokyo on October 7th, 2010.
